Development Director 

Job Description


The Development Director is a full-time, exempt, salaried position and reports directly to the Executive Director.  This is a 40 hour per week position and the general responsibilities will be performed primarily Monday through Friday 9 am-5 pm each day. Occasional weekends or evenings may be required.     


The Development Director is responsible for assisting the organization in reaching its overall fundraising goals by creating and implementing a comprehensive strategic fundraising plan that includes but is not limited to: Annual Giving, Special Events, Grants and Foundation Giving, Individual Giving, Major Gifts, and Planned Giving. 


Essential Duties and Functions


  • Must initiate, plan, implement and lead a comprehensive operational fundraising strategy and program.
  • Develop and implement strategies for cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding all donations and gifts.
  • Lead planning, execution, and evaluation of RMHC signature fundraising events. 
  • Develop and implement a strong planned giving program.
  • In coordination with the Communications Director, research, write, edit or oversee the preparation of persuasive and accurate solicitations and other development-related communication materials.
  • Oversee donor stewardship activities, appreciation events and ensure proper donor recognition. 
  • Develop and maintain proper procedures and record-keeping of donor database.  
  • Facilitate and manage third-party fundraising events. 
  • In coordination with Executive Director, identify grant opportunities and prepare grant proposals. 
  • Attend RMHC sponsored events and other activities conducted to benefit RMHC.
  • As necessary, and in collaboration with Executive Director, prepare and implement plans to address capital needs arising from new programs and initiatives. 


Additional Duties
  • Represent RMHC to various audiences in a professional manner consistent with the image and mission of RMHC of Southern West Virginia and deliver presentations to external and internal groups, including the Board of Directors, donor prospects, business groups, and volunteers. 
  • Participate in appropriate professional organizations for continuing education and professional growth. 
  • Completes special assignments and/or projects as assigned. 


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred. 
  • 3-5 years professional experience in development for non-profit organizations or equivalent sales experience in the private sector. 
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple and diverse tasks.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, strategic planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of donors, staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers. 
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to make independent decisions, demonstrate leadership and build relationships.
  • Experience and computer proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and donor database management systems.
  • Working knowledge of accounting and budgeting processes. 
  • Ability to collaborate and participate as a flexible, responsive team member.  
  • Interest, enthusiasm, and affinity for non-profit organizations and working with people
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel
  • Subject to a complete criminal background check with acceptable results


Physical Requirements
  • This position requires lifting up to 35 lbs. The position also requires walking, standing, and sitting.
